Who are your dream collaborators?
It can be anyone. I’m looking for new perspectives. I’m looking for effortless musicality that just bubbles out. When you forget to care what anyone will think of the music because you’re too distracted by how much fun it is to make – that’s when you know you’ve found a good collaborator.
What is the story behind your latest release?
Laufey had written “Lover Girl” in Tokyo and brought it to my house when we started production on her upcoming album A Matter of Time. We came up with these chords in the bridge that really make you feel like you’re losing your mind, mirroring the lyrics in a way that felt totally fresh to me.
What is your best advice for songwriters?
Music isn’t a race. I spent my 20’s working in obscurity. A career in music felt like an impossible dream. It always gave me strength knowing that the only deadline for the success I imagined was death, so it didn’t matter if it happened when I was 24 or 54. A life-long commitment will give you the confidence to take baby steps on a path of your own design, rather than frantically grasping for success in the present.
