Art vs. Artist 2023

Lucy Stewart Art vs Artist 2023

I’ve been seeing a lot of the illustrators I follow make #artvsartist posts this December, and since this is the first year I started actively learning to draw, I thought I might participate!

Developing this new skill has been pure fun. My perfectionist personality usually makes me pretty fearful of trying new things, which is why I’ve *wanted* to draw for over 10 years, but have never even attempted until now.

Although it’s easy to compare my drawings and quick sketches to all of the incredibly inspiring artists out there, I’m just too proud that I’m actually trying (and LOVING!) something new to let comparisons bother me.

As a teen and young adult I was a singer-songwriter because I loved to sing and perform, but I honestly never found joy in the process of songwriting or music business aspects. So much felt like a chore that I could never “check off” to meet my impossibly high expectations. I don’t know why I held on to the identity of “I AM A MUSIC ARTIST” so long despite the red flags!

I cannot understate how different it feels to be a teacher, and now to be a budding illustrator, where each step of growth feels exciting, positive, and rewarding.

I’m so grateful now for the identity shifts I’ve had in my career and passions and how they’ve affected my parenting. Seeing Dottie be a beginner at absolutely everything is so inspiring, and I love learning from her natural persistence and positive attitude!

Thanks for following along! 🎨🎶🍎
