DIY Oversized Felt Swatch Cards (Free Tutorial)

When it comes to choosing colors for a felt project, I’ve learned that bigger swatches make a big difference. I recently made some oversized swatch cards for my Benzie Design wool felt collection, and they’ve totally changed the way I build color palettes. Seeing colors layered, side by side, or in different lighting helps me make decisions with more confidence (and fewer second guesses).

My mom’s an interior designer, and she always reminds me to sample paint in the actual space—because light and time of day can completely change how a color feels. I figure if that’s true for walls, it’s true for wool felt too.

And the best part? These swatch cards are super quick to make and beginner-friendly. Let’s get started!

Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 10-15min per card (+ Drying Time)

Tools + Supplies

Find the following colors, tools, and more from BenzieDesign.com.

  • Benzie Design Information Cards (PDF Download Below)

  • Paper Cutter

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Pinking Shears

  • Turbo Tacky Glue

  • Screw Punch, 4mm Tip

  • Self-Healing Cutting Mat

  • Loose Leaf Binder Rings (Optional)

Directions

1. Prepare Information Cards

Print all swatch information cards on white cardstock. Use a paper cutter to trim just inside the outlines (so the lines do not show).

2. Prep Felt

Place an information card on top of the felt as a guide, and use fabric scissors to cut a large square. Leave at least ½” margins on all sides of the card.

3. Zig Zag!

Use pinking shears to trim the felt to your desired size around the information card.

4. Glue

Apply Turbo Tacky Glue to the back of the information card and adhere it to the felt. Let dry under a heavy book.

5. Punch

Place the swatch on a self-healing cutting mat, paper side up. Use a 4mm screw punch, aligning it with the black dot on the card. Press firmly and evenly to punch a hole.

6. Repeat and Store

Make as many swatches as you’d like, then store them on loose-leaf binder rings.

That’s it—easy, satisfying, and endlessly useful! Once you’ve made a few swatch cards, you’ll wonder how you ever picked palettes without them. I love flipping through mine to spark inspiration or to narrow down colors for a new project.

Whether you’re organizing your felt stash or building your first collection, I hope this project helps you feel more connected to your creative process. If you give it a try, I’d love to see — tag me on Instagram @MoseyCreative or drop me a note!
