Felt Celebration Flags

Celebration flags make everything feel more festive – big or small! I made matching ones for our patio and dollhouse in a playful color palette that is easily customizable. I wanted the ability to change out the colors depending on the holiday or occasion, so I used a screw punch to make holes and threaded them baker’s twine.

Materials

Available at Benzie Design

  • Flag Cut Template (PDF Download Below)

  • Felt (I used Benzie’s Bellwether Wool Felt in Rhubarb, Tellina, Bellwether Ecru, Honeydew, Teal, Nordic, Cerulean, Magpie, and Phlox)

  • Freezer Paper

  • Iron

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Fabric Stiffener

  • Screw Punch

  • Self-Healing Cutting Mat

  • Baker’s Twine

Directions

1. Cut Felt

Print or trace the Cut Template above onto the dull side of freezer paper, then iron shiny side to felt. Cut all pieces.

2. Punch Holes

Place flag on a self-healing cutting mat and use a Screw Punch to create two holes at the top of each flag, approximately ½-inch from the corner. I used a 4mm tip for the large flags, and 2mm for the dollhouse size.

3. Stiffen

Use Fabric Stiffener to add a bit of structure and keep flags looking crisp. Place flags flat in a cardboard box and spray both sides liberally in a well-ventilated area. Let dry for about an hour, then use a press cloth and iron to set.

4. Thread & Hang

Use baker’s twine to thread through each flag, then hang to get the party started!

For the dollhouse flags, I used a tapestry needle to help thread through the tiny holes. And bonus, my three-year-old was able to help with this as a beginner sewing activity! To hang the mini flags in her dollhouse, I used a bit of white gaffer’s tape (a favorite household item of mine for concealing cords, baby-proofing, etc.).

I hope this project helps you feel more connected to your creative process. If you give this a try, I’d love to see – tag me on Instagram @MoseyCreative or drop me a note!
